| Texas has been facing a growing demand for mental
health and substance abuse services and this demand is expected
to continue growing for both adults and children over the next few
years. The provision of mental health crisis services has long been
a challenge for communities across Texas and the nation. One particular
challenge has been the scarcity of basic crisis services that could
often help individuals avoid longer and more costly treatment. In
an effort to improve mental health and substance abuse crisis services,
the 80th Texas Legislature appropriated $82 million for use (over
the FY 08-09 biennium) across the state. Funds are disseminated
to Travis County and other Texas communities by Texas Department
of State Health Services upon completion of Local Crisis Redesign
Plans.
The Local Crisis Redesign Plan
submitted to Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) by
ATCMHMR is the result of several years of planning in the Austin/Travis
County community. The input and recommendations from diverse community
stakeholders is reflected in the completed documents. The Local
Crisis Redesign Plan was submitted in two parts.
