SUMMARY REPORT of 7th Central Texas African
American Family Support conference
“Transforming Healthier Communities: Mind, Body &
Soul”
The Central Texas African American Family Support Conference was
held February 9-10, 2007, at the Omni Austin Hotel at Southpark
in Austin, Texas. The conference, hosted by Austin Travis County
Mental Health Mental Retardation Center and sponsored with community
partners continues to provide information and education to consumers,
families, service providers, and the community about mental health,
mental retardation/developmental disabilities, chemical dependence,
and co-occurring disorders. Behavioral health, physical health,
and spirituality tracks are integrated. Highly respected and well-known
experts in the field, such as Dr. M. Joycelyn Elders, Rev. Michael
Livingston, and author Julia A. Boyd were this year’s keynote
presenters. The event had the participation of 538 individuals and
numerous organizations.
This conference targets the African American community, but embraces
all members of the community, regardless of race or ethnicity, and
conference participation at all levels has been across racial and
ethnic lines.
